Since all living things need it, and it makes up two-thirds of our bodies, it seems obvious that water is vital to our health. Most people, however, drink fewer than the eight recommended glasses each day. An alarming one-third drink no water at all!
So why is drinking enough water so important? A minor water deficiency can lead to headaches, sleepiness, and moodiness, while prolonged dehydration can cause high blood pressure and other serious problems.
Drinking water helps our bodies in a variety of ways. It helps us get rid of toxins, which enables our kidneys to do a better job, and it helps prevent bladder infections. It improves digestion and helps us develop antibodies. Finally, water is a great moisturizer and gives our skin a healthy glow.
Drinking water throughout the day is an important habit to pick up. For your health, give this simple substance the importance it deserves.

When you’re sitting, you’re essentially inactive, right? And there’s mounting evidence that long stretches of inactivity are not good for you, even if you’re not overweight and seem basically healthy。
Metabolizing Food
For example, in one experiment, researchers had healthy subjects spend an entire day sitting, then measured how well their bodies metabolized food and made insulin to regulate blood sugar。
The next day the subjects were allowed to get up and move around, but without doing any strenuous or even moderate exercise. And again, the researchers took the same measurements。
So What Did They Find?
That’s the amazing thing. After just one day of sitting, the participants’ metabolism was starting to go haywire。
They didn’t literally become diabetic, but their bodies showed signs of struggling to produce insulin, a hormone needed to draw sugar from blood into bodily tissues。
And When They Were Standing?
No problems with insulin. Now, one experiment doesn’t prove anything. But other studies have found similar eviden

If 如果
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and 7)sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on !”; If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty

[English]

Now let us discuss five simple techniques to improve memory:
Perhaps Chunking is the oldest method used in memorization. In this method, the items to be memorized are divided into small and easily memorizable chunks or groups. This method works best when the order of the items is not important. If possible, organize the material as meaningfully as you can and think out relationships among each group.
eg. The list Apple, cucumber, paper, ink, cabbage, banana, grapes, beans, stapler, orange can be better learned by rearranging and applying chunking as: Apple, banana, grapes, orange, cucumber, cabbage, beans, paper, ink, stapler——4 fruits, 3 vegetables and 3 stationery items.
2. Rhyming押韵法
This is also one of the popular and oldest methods in memorization. This technique makes use of the fact that we have a natural tendency to remember rhymes and rhythms. Create rhymes will not only aid in improving your memory but in improving your creativity as well.
eg. "Thirty days haveth September; April, June and November; All the rest have thirty-one; February has twenty-eight alone; Except in leap year, then the time; When Febs days

An old man shuffled slowly into a restaurant. With shoulders bent forward, he leaned on his trusty cane with each unhurried step. A young waitress named Mary ran over to him, and said, "Here, sir! Let me give you a hand with that chair."
She pulled the chair away from the table. Supporting him with one arm, she helped him move in front of the chair, and get comfortably seated. Then she moved the table close to him, and leaned his cane against the table where he could reach it.
In a soft, clear voice he said, "Thank you, Miss." "You're welcome, sir!" she replied. "And my name is Mary. I'll be back in a moment, and if you need anything anytime, just wave at me!"
After the old man finished his breakfast, Mary handed him his cane, and walked with him to the front door. Holding the door open for him, she said, "Come back and see us, sir!" He turned with his whole body, winked a smile, and nodded a thank you.
When Mary went to clean his table, she found a business card under his plate, and a note scribbled on a napkin.
The note on the napkin read: "Dear Mary, I

[English]

The story goes that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face.
The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, he wrote in the sand: "Today my best friend slapped me in the face."
They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him.
After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: "Today my best friend saved my life."
The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now you write on a stone. Why?"
The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us we should write it down in the sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in a stone where no wind can ever erase it."
LEARN TO WRITE YOUR HURTS IN THE SAND AND TO CARVE YOUR BENEFITS IN THE STONE.

They call it culturomics: the obvious play on the word “genomics” looks at trends in human thought and culture. But scientists say culturomics has been hampered by a lack of quantitative data. So researchers at Harvard, along with Google, Encyclopedia Britannica, and the American Heritage Dictionary, have come up with a new tool.
It’s a database of 5.2 million books, published since the year 1500. That’s four percent of all the books ever published, with a total of 500 billion words. The focus is on English language culture, so three quarters of the books are in English.
Among the first findings of the research, published in the journal Science: about, 8500 new words enter the English language annually. But many of them don’t end up in dictionaries. And about fame—actors become famous around age 30, writers around 40, and politicians around 50. But the fame of politicians can eventually exceed that of actors.
A Google tool called the Books Ngram Viewer is available based on this data—users can track the usage and frequency of a word or phrase over the past few centuries. Thus, we can wa

Marva Collins is an American educator who in 1975 started Westside Preparatory School in Garfield Park, an impoverished neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. She is famous for applying classical education successfully with impoverished students, many of whom had been wrongly labeled as learning disabled by public schools. She once wrote, "I have discovered few learning disabled students in my three decades of teaching. I have, however, discovered many, many victims of teaching inabilities." * There is a brilliant child locked inside every student. * Don't try to fix the students, fix ourselves first. * The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another. * Success doesn't come to you...you go to it. * Excellence is not an act but a habit. To build in space, we need extremely specialized tools. But with hi-tech, comes higher risks. Losing any of this unconventional gear could be a disaster. So we are going to need even more extraordinary technology—a way to make unlimited replacements. If we have a science fiction replicator, there are replicate tools. A tool, thus, suddenly appears in space, that would be pretty cool. But we don’t have that yet. Or do we?
Tribune of the Poor Other Woman。
In this way, whatever people do monkeys don’t,can be called “culture”.
  受到伤害的妻子们当然不甘心(not reconciled),于是她们发起反击,进行“婚姻保卫战”(launch a war to defend their marriage),提出要严打(crack down on)“小三”们,有人甚至提出“小三过街人人喊打!”(Everyone should shout “beat them” when they see the other women!)
  可见“小三论坛”虽然使这些“不放手———痛苦,放手———也痛苦”(suffer bitterness either continue or end such relations)的女性有了宣泄的地方(a place to give vent to their bitterness),但这并非解决问题的根本办法(ways to eradicate this phenomenon)。

(1) 从上两例中看出,do / does / did 代替动词。
He [w=translate]translated the article better than I did. (did代替wrote it)
— Do you think she is clever?
— I think so. (so代替 she is clever)
(2) "so 与 not" 代替某个词、短语、句子等,通常用于hope, think, believe, expect, suppose, be afraid, fear, imagine, etc后作宾语。
— Is it correct?
— I'm afraid not. (not correct)
(3) "to" 用作不定式,常跟随下列动词:want, mean, hope, expect, refuse, seem, intend, be, afraid, etc.
I asked him to go to the party, but he refused to. (go to the party)
(4) "do so, do that, do it" 用来代替动态动词,而不能代静态动词。
— He gave up studying English.
— Why did he do so? (= give up studying English)
— The dish tastes nice.
— Yes, so it does. (tastes nice)
(此句不能用it does it 或 it does so, 因taste属静态动词。)
— He is thinking of buying a car?
— Is he? (这里,“thinking of buying a car”被省略了。)
— Will he come back in time?
— Perhaps. (省略了he will come back in time.)

A Charcoal-burner carried on his trade in his own house. One day he met a friend, a fuller(漂洗工) , and entreated(恳求,请求) him to come and live with him, saying that they should be far better neighbors and  that their housekeeping expenses would be lessened. The Fuller replied, "The arrangement is impossible as far as I am concerned,  for whatever I should whiten, you would immediately blacken again  with your charcoal(木炭) ."
Like will draw like.

Among the English, gossip about one’s own private doings is reserved for intimates; gossip about the private lives of friends and family is shared with a slightly wider social circle; gossip about the personal affairs of acquaintances, colleagues and neighbours with a larger group; and gossip about the intimate details of public figures’ or celebrities’ lives with almost anyone. This is the distance rule. The more ‘distant’ from you the subject of gossip, the wider the circle of people with whom you may gossip about that person。
The distance rule allows gossip to perform its vital social functions – social bonding; clarification of position and status; assessment and management of reputations; transmission of social skills, norms and values – without undue invasion of privacy. More importantly, it also allows nosey-parker anthropologists to formulate their prying questions in such a roundabout manner as to bypass the privacy rules。
If, for example, you want to find out about an English person’s attitudes and feelings on a sensitive subject, such as, say, marriage, you do not ask about his or her own marriage – you talk about someone else’s marriage, preferably that

Spit Analysis Reveals Hocker's Age
Saliva contains many useful components. Lubricants. Enzymes for breaking down food. And now, compounds that can reveal a person’s age. That’s according to a study in the journal Public Library of Science ONE.
During normal development, DNA in your body gets what’s called methylated. Small chemicals called methyl groups bind to the DNA, helping to determine which genes become active. But the patterns of methylation change as we grow older. Which was a clue that measuring methylation might give away age.
The researchers studied DNA in saliva contributed by 34 pairs of male identical twins, ages 21 to 55. They found 88 sites on the men’s DNA where the amount of methylation correlated with their ages. The scientists next verified that finding in 60 men and women, ages 18 to 70.
Then they narrowed in on two genes that had the strongest age-related correlation. And using just that data, they found that they could estimate the ages of their saliva contributors to within five years.
This technique might help in crime scene investigations—recovered saliva could tell the ag

Traditional Chinese weddings are always filled with red things to bring auspicious blessings and respects. And even wedding customs reflect traditions from Chinese philosophy. 1. Favoring red comes from worship of the sun喜欢红色来自太阳崇拜
The Chinese regard the color red as the symbol of happiness, success, luck, faith and growth. They like red very much, which comes from worship of the Sun. In traditional Chinese weddings, there are double Xi characters in red, red scarves, red flowers and the bride wears a red coat. 2. The wedding ceremony shows harmony between nature and people婚礼传达出“天人合一”的思想
A marriage is not only a merger of the couple; traditionally, it symbolizes the merger of two families. So the wedding ceremony should reflect the holiness of marriage, drawing the attention of relatives and friends. There is harmony between nature and the people inside. Inviting relatives and friends to the wedding symbolizes the formality and the relationships between people. During a marriage, two families become in-laws. The ceremony reflects the importance and family status of the parents. After the ceremony, the bride and the groom usually burn money an

Love really is blind when it comes to physical flaws, it would seem。 Research suggests that we view our loved ones through rose-tinted glasses that overlook the crooked noses, bulging tummies or other attributes that might put others off。 As a result, husbands and wives think their other halves are more attractive than they really are。 The phenomenon could help explain some apparently physically mis-matched couples such as the glamorous Beyonce and Jay-Z, the striking Lara Stone and David Walliams, or the statuesque Sophie Dahl and the diminutive Jamie Cullum。 The ‘positive illusion’ theory comes from researchers who asked 70 couples to rate their other halves for attractiveness。 Questions included how attractive their husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend was to the opposite sex, and how they rated compared with others of the same age. The answers were kept confidential to prevent any partners taking umbrage。 Some of those taking part also rated photos of their partners. In addition, members of the public judged the looks of all 140 men and women taking part。 The results revealed that couples view their other halves as being better looking than they really are。 Even asking them to rate pictures of their partners did not give them a reality check, the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships reports。 With previous studies finding that we view our loved

1. Hang in there.
Hang in there. I'll call the ambulance. 2. Cheer up. You've done a good job.
You've done a good job. You've done a good job. Well done. 3. You are very supportive.
You support me a lot. My parents support me to go to the college. My husband is very supportive. You are very supportive.

Expertise Provides Protection against Bias
Money can’t buy you love. It’s assumed, though, that it can buy loyalty—at least brand loyalty. But a new study shows that people with true expertise in a subject have some immunity to the siren song of corporate sponsorship. The work appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. [Link to come.]
We worry about bias in all walks of life, from the lab to the legislature. Because “gifts” from special interest groups, whether pharma companies or political action committees, could sway the opinions of decision-makers.
To examine the relationship between gratuities and opinion, researchers asked 20 art experts and 20 non-experts to view a series of paintings. But first, subjects were shown the logo of a fictitious company that would be giving them $300 for participating.
Turns out the non-experts were partial to paintings that were paired with the sponsor’s logo. That preference went hand in hand with the activation of a part of the brain involved in value judgment. The experts, on the other hand, showed no such bias. They switched on another part of the brain that apparently overrode the region won over by the cash.<
